Objective

Physikalischer Ozeanograph mit Schwerpunkt numerische Modelle und Data-Science-Methoden zur Erforschung kleinskaliger Strukturen und der großskaligen ozeanischen Zirkulation sowie deren Auswirkungen auf das globale Klima und Klimaänderungen. Zusammenarbeit an verschiedenen interdisziplinären, wissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen, von der ozeanischen Biogeochemie bis zur Ökosystemkonnektivität mariner Organismen.

Gegenwärtige Schwerpunkte

Untersuchung der Auswirkungen kleinskaliger Wirbel auf Klima und Ökosysteme. Koordinierender PI des ERC-Synergieprojekts WHIRLS zur Beobachtung und Simulation kleinskaliger Ozeanprozesse, zur Quantifizierung ihrer Rolle und ihrer Auswirkungen auf die globale Ozeanzirkulation, den Wärme- und Kohlenstoffaustausch zwischen Atmosphäre und Ozean und das ozeanische Biom sowie zur Entwicklung der Darstellung kleinskaliger Prozesse in Erdsystemmodellen zur Verbesserung der Klimavorhersage.

Untersuchung des ozeanischen Austausches zwischen Indischem Ozean und Atlantik durch das Agulhasstromsystem (DFG-, EU- und BMBF-Projekte); Co-chair der SCOR Arbeitsgruppe Nr. 136 "Climatic Importance of the Greater Agulhas System" (2010-2012).

Modellieren der atlantischen Zirkulationsvariabilität (EU- und BMBF-Projekte); gemeinsame Arbeit in der europäischen Modellierinitiative DRAKKAR, insbesondere der Atlantischen Meridionalen Umwälzbewegung (AMOC) in Verbindung mit submesoskaliger und mesoskaliger Varibilität.

Koordination der Informations- und Datenwissenschaften als Sprecher der Helmholtz School for Marine Data Science MarDATA (2019-2024).
